A true disciple is the one who follows his master closely, study everything from the face of his master and always ready to act in accordance with the words of the master. The eagerness to know and the loyalty to the master are the inevitable qualities of a disciple. We celebrate the memory of St. Thomas the apostle who through his life proved that he is a true disciple. This memorial helps us to reflect upon our discipleship and to strengthen our Christian life.
St. Thomas had an eagerness to know and to follow the truth. When Jesus told: you know the way to the place where I am going (Jn 14: 4), Thomas became confused. He asked: Lord, we do not know where you are going. Then how can we know the way? (Jn 14: 5). In Thomas’ question we realize his eagerness to know the truth. In front of his curiosity, divine mysteries were unveiled. Jesus says: I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except thorough me (Jn 14: 6). Thus Jesus reveals his mission and identity before the disciples.
When St. Thomas experienced the truth, he was ready to wholeheartedly follow the truth he knew. When Jesus revealed to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem to take up the cross and die on it all disciples were scared. But St. Thomas with boldness and courage said: Let us also go, that we may die with him (Jn 11: 16). Faithfulness is an inevitable quality of a true disciple. He should be ready to follow the master and to be with Him even in the adverse moments of his life. The relation between Jesus and Thomas was strong enough to offer himself for the truth he knew. St. Thomas invites us to lead our life of discipleship with faithfulness and heartfelt affection to Christ Jesus. Let this commemoration help us to enkindle the lamp of faith we received from St. Thomas till the ends of the earth.
