Men without Light

After completing his formation in the Ashram and before he could return home the master took the young student for one last session to a cave near the river.  When he reached the cave the master informed the student that he had forgotten to carry the parchment which he planned to take the student through and asked the student to fetch the parchment from the Ashram. The student readily agreed and took the lamp to proceed. Just then the master put off the lamp and asked the student to go with the unlit lamp and get the parchment. The student was not able to go for long as he could not see anything in the dark and somehow managed to reach the master back. The master asked him, ‘what happened my son?’ The student replied saying that he could not go ahead without light. Then the master said, ‘even though you had the lamp you could not walk because you could not see, the same way if you do not have the Lord in your life and heart you will fall at some time or the other in your life however educated or intelligent you may be. Your education will not be able to help you and this is the most important lesson that you need to learn in life.’ The student learnt the importance of humility and departed from the master.

When we flaunt our achievement we believe that we were able to achieve success because of our talent and effort. However when we are caught unawares with trials and tribulation we soon lose hope and faith. The reason for this is the fact that we do not have the Lord in our lives and our heart. When we have God in our lives we are able to see the plan of God in everything that happens to us and we are able to discern the love of God who is able to turn every sorrow into Joy. He will be able to realize that God is above any form of education and the role of God in our lives. Let us realize and live this truth in our lives.

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (In John 8:12).
