So Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you continue to obey my teaching, you are truly my followers. Then you will know the truth and the truth will make you free” (John 08:31).
There are avenues that call you to walk through for freedom. There are ways in which you could go in search of deliverance to keep you away from issues. But one of the most precious and powerful thing that could save your soul through eternity is Truth.
Having the true knowledge of what we are, what is our purpose, where we are heading towards and who is in control, directs us to the reality. Slowly and steadily, as you move towards the realization of reality, you learn the truth. But in the walk of faith, the Truth is not learned by the realization of reality, but by faith. You see the reality of your life and surroundings through your faith, and this in turn teaches you the truth.
There are millions of people in this world who have sacrificed their entire life in search of the truth. And most of them waited until they crossed the mountains and valleys in their search to figure out the shape of truth; the reality of their life. Even after hundreds of adventurous journeys through life, they couldn’t find the truth that could show them the way; the truth that would deliver them out of their darkness. They couldn’t find the gateway of truth that would keep them safe from evil; the truth that would set them free from their slavery to sin.
But in faith, through Christ Jesus, we find the truth. We discover the magnificent reward that this truth gives us; the eternal life. And the journey of this search for truth is clear. The road is named and that is wonderfully pointed out by Jesus. There is one highway to find truth, and that is ‘the obedience to Christ Jesus’ teaching!’ Continuing to obey the Lord’s teaching makes you His follower. Thus we find that the highway to Truth that will make us free is clearly mentioned by our Lord Jesus Christ. I just remember this song as I write these lines…
“Trust and Obey,
there is no other way,
To be happy in Jesus,
But to Trust and Obey.”
Obedience to Christ’s teaching sets you on the journey of finding the Truth, and this makes us Christ’s followers as he leads us through the path, step by step. And as this obedience to His teaching continues to grow and as we step forward as His followers, then we slowly begin to know the Truth; the truth that God is in control of our lives and the purpose with which He is leading us. And, finally, knowing this Truth through faith makes us free; free from sin!
Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, everyone who lives in sin is a slave to sin. A slave does not stay with a family forever, but a son belongs to the family forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be truly free” (John 08: 34-36). Thus, we as slaves to sin, have the need to be set free from this slavery. And this could happen only through finding the Truth. And this truth could be found only through the obedience to the teachings of Christ Jesus.
I pray that all of us would be living a life that appreciates and obeys the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, and thus we would be His faithful followers. This would lead us to the truth and this truth will, indeed, deliver us from the slavery of sin.
Let us learn to obey the teachings of our Lord so that we will be led to the perfection of the truth.
